Cycling while HoH - safety advice?

Every summer I get a strong itch to buy a cute bicycle to commute to work! Cycling is so healthy and environmentally friendly, and I don't have a car so I think it would be pretty liberating as well. However, I haven't yet taken the plunge since it is impossible for me to hear anyone or anything approaching me from behind (and I'm sure wind noise is only going to exacerbate the situation), plus my city doesn't have bike lanes, so I'm very concerned about safety. I'm not finding very much info online that pertains to bike safety for the deaf and hard of hearing - do any of you fine folks have suggestions, please? I know that helmet mirrors are an option, but for aesthetic purposes I'm wondering if there are any other choices - handebar mirrors, perhaps?

Thanks so much for any advice you can offer!
